The puck screen, when placed directly on top of the properly tamped/prepared puck prior to extraction helps with more even distribution of water across the puck. A less forceful water impact on the puck means less channelling.
It also hugely reduces the amount of coffee that is left on or behind the shower screen after extraction.

This thing does not work. Still get lots of pooling and channelling with my puck on a Breville Barista Express. Tried different baskets and same results. Would not recommend
