Firstly, it makes no sense to store your expensive coffee beans in the grinder’s hopper – they simply get stale and after even a day in the hopper your grinder setting is out and needs to be adjusted, finer and finer trying to get a good flow and good crema. Then when your hopper is empty you add fresh beans and your extraction chokes because now you’re too fine and have to spend time trying to get your setting perfect again.
Secondly, you’re not tied to one bean. Mix it up a little and use different beans every time, don’t forget that decaf before bedtime if it’s your thing.
Thirdly, no waste (enough said).

I’ve been very pleased with my DF-54 espresso grinder. Despite some concerns about the hopper’s durability, I’ve used it daily for months without any issues. It remains firmly in place, even during frequent grinding sessions.
The flat burrs are a significant upgrade from my previous conical burr grinder. The grind size distribution is noticeably more consistent, resulting in improved extraction and flavour. My espresso shots are now more balanced and flavourful.
The grinder’s precision is impressive. I’ve never noticed a significant difference between the weight of beans input and the ground coffee output, indicating minimal retention. This ensures that every grind is optimised.
While the portafilter arm could be more sturdy, the dosing cup with sleeve provides a stable platform for grinding.
Overall, the DF-54 is a reliable and accurate grinder that delivers excellent results. It’s well-suited for both espresso and other coffee brewing methods. I highly recommend it to anyone seeking a significant upgrade in their coffee grinding experience.
As far as value for money inconcerned, I doubt this grinder will easily be beaten. Under R6,000 for a signle dose, 54mm flat-burr grinder
